「記憶の編み目 ― Invisible Threads」

人はなぜ、過去を見つめるのでしょうか。

私たちは、日々多くのことを経験しながら、そのすべてを言葉にできるわけではありません。記憶は時にかたちを変え、薄れていきながらも、私たちの内側に確かに残っています。

「Invisible Threads」では大垣美穂子と熊谷雲炎という異なる表現手法をもつアーティストが、それぞれの視点で「目に見えない記憶の痕跡」をたどります。
大垣は、沖縄の珊瑚に触れた体験とコロナ禍の記憶から、生命の連なりと再生のエネルギーを編み出します。
熊谷は、感染症と免疫にまつわる身体の記憶を、古代文字と墨のレイヤーによって可視化し、無意識の深層に沈む祈りを浮かび上がらせます。

二人の作品は、それぞれ異なる素材や文脈から出発しながらも、どこかで交差し、私たちに静かに語りかけます。
見えない記憶と記録、それらをつなぐ「編み目」のような感覚に、耳を澄ませてみてください。


熊谷雲炎「immune memory」　　2022年

感染症の流行を背景に、「免疫の記憶」と人間の曖昧な記憶の重なりに着目した書作品。
使用した言葉は「衆生無辺誓願度」。観音菩薩の慈悲の誓いを、古代の金文で表現している。

素材には、煤や古墨など、痕跡を残すものを用い、網膜に見立てたレイヤーに文字を重ねることで、無意識に沈む記憶の揺らぎを表した。

神に捧げられた古代文字と仏のかたちを重ね、日本における神仏習合を象徴。作品を逆さに展示することで、苦しみの中から学びや再生を見出す「逆菩薩」の視点を提示している。

古代文字を用い、その意味と形の調和を作品に表現しています。
書画と現代アートを融合させ、西洋化によって失われた「書画同源」の再生を目指しています。その根底にあるのは「メメント・モリ」。生命の儚さと死の避けられない現実を受け入れる考え方です。
作品に現れる墨の滲みは、人間関係や環境、生と死の狭間を象徴し、日本の「あわい」という概念を視覚化しています。
形而上的な心の動きを文字に託し、そのアプローチを通じて自身の信念や内面の探求を作品に反映させています。古代の文字を用いることで、現代社会への問いかけを行い、未来へのメッセージを紡ぎ出すことを目指しています。

“Invisible Threads: The Weave of Memory”

Why do we look back on the past?
As human beings, we go through countless experiences every day—yet not everything can be put into words. Memories shift in form, fade over time, and yet, they remain deeply embedded within us.

In Invisible Threads, two artists—Mihoko Ogaki and Unen Kumagai—with different styles of expression will trace the "invisible traces of memory" from their own perspectives.
Ogaki draws inspiration from her physical encounter with coral on the shores of Okinawa and the collective memory of the COVID-19 pandemic, weaving together a sense of life’s continuity and the energy of regeneration.
Kumagai visualizes bodily memory related to disease and immunity through ancient script and layers of ink, revealing prayers that lie quietly in the depths of the unconscious.

Although their works originate from different materials and contexts, the works of these two artists intersect somewhere and speak to us quietly.

Unyen kumagai “immune memory”　　2022

This work was created in response to the global spread of infectious diseases, focusing on the concept of “immune memory” and how it parallels the uncertainty and fragility of human memory.

The phrase depicted in the piece is “Shujō Muhen Seigan Do”, meaning “I vow to save all sentient beings,” one of the Four Universal Vows taken by Bodhisattvas before their spiritual practice. Kumagai expresses this vow using kinbun, an ancient form of Chinese script historically used in bronze inscriptions.

Materials such as soot, old ink, and glue—substances that leave lasting traces—were selected to represent the lingering effects of memory. The surface is treated as a symbolic retina, and calligraphy is layered on top to visualize how memory resides and fluctuates deep within the unconscious mind.

By combining ancient script offered to the gods with the image of a Buddha figure, the piece reflects the syncretic tradition of Shinbutsu-Shūgō—the historical blending of Shinto and Buddhist beliefs in Japan.

The work is intentionally exhibited upside down to express the perspective of the “Reverse Bodhisattva,” suggesting that even in moments of pain or adversity, there is potential for insight, healing, and transformation.

Using ancient characters, I express the harmony of their meanings and forms in works.By fusing calligraphy and contemporary art, he aims to revitalize the “Shoga Dogen” that has been lost due to westernization.
At the root of his work is “Memento Mori. It is a way of thinking that accepts the transience of life and the inevitable reality of death.
The ink blotches that appear in his works symbolize the space between human relationships, the environment, life and death, and visualize the Japanese concept of “awai. She entrusts the metaphysical movements of his mind to letters, and through this approach, his works reflect his own beliefs and inner explorations. By using ancient characters, he aims to question contemporary society and weave a message for the future.
